Yesterday rumours were circulating that Treyarch and Activision are working on a battle royale mode for BLOPS 4 and today it’s EA and DICE that are supposedly working on their own version.
2018 looks like it will be the year of the battle royale as developers fumble around trying to imitate success stories instead of creating original ideas. According to a report on VentureBeat from a source in the know, EA and DICE are currently prototyping a battle royale mode for the this year’s Battlefield V.
This has to be treated as rumour at the moment but it would be typical of both Activision and EA to go chasing the dollars from what has become the latest craze in gaming. Whether battle royale will survive at its current level for years to come is debatable because we have seen this happen time and time again with MOBAs and MMOs. Battle royale is unlikely to be any different and we can expect some casualties along the way.
If EA does release a battle royale mode they had better call it Battlefield Royale or the branding people should be fired.
