Baldur’s Gate 3 guide — Character creation for races, backgrounds, and origins

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers players several choices of backgrounds, origins, and races. Here’s the first part of our character creation guide to help you craft your hero.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Character creation guide — Backgrounds and origins

The origins feature for Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently unavailable during this stage of the Early Access period. It’s supposed to let you play as premade characters. For now, though, the only option that’s available is “custom origin,” so you’ll have to create a character from scratch.

As for backgrounds, these are additional tidbits about your created character. They offer additional proficiency in a variety of mechanics. These include Insight, History, Acrobatics, and more. For instance, the Sage and Acolyte backgrounds are fairly decent if you want to strictly roleplay as caster archetypes.

After choosing your background, it’s time to pick a race. I’ve split these up into multiple pages to give you a better idea of the customization involved. Just click on a page for a particular race or subrace that interests you.

• Elf – High Elf and Wood Elf
• Tiefling – Asmodeus, Mephistopheles, and Zariel
• Drow – Lolth-Sworn and Seldarine
• Human
• Githyanki
  
• Dwarf – Gold and Shield
• Half-Elf – High, Wood, and Drow
• Halfling – Lightfoot and Strongheart
