Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Unique companions for your raiding crew
Your Jomsviking raiding crew members aren’t just the player-created characters you’ve recruited. They can also be unique companions that’ll join you depending on the choices you’ve made throughout the game.
Grantbridge companion: Birna
You’ll meet Birna while completing the Grantbridge arc. Here, you’ll need to decide on the traitor who has betrayed Soma.
It’s definitely not Birna, and it’s also not Lif.
The traitor is actually Galinn based on the clues and dialogue options.
Once he’s executed and you complete the rest of the Grantbridge arc, Birna will offer to join your raiding crew.
East Anglia companion: Finnr
Finnr is a warrior and advisor who gives guidance to the timid Oswald, the newbie King of East Anglia. Throughout the arc, you’ll realize that Oswald is so unprepared, but he tries his best to stand up for himself.
As for Finnr, the decision that lets you recruit him happens towards the end of the East Anglia arc once you think everybody’s happy.
Oswald’s rival, Rued, pops up to challenge him. You can let Oswald duke it out, or fight on his behalf.
Choose the latter and defeat Rued so that Finnr joins you. If you let Oswald fight this battle, Finnr will be impressed with Oswald’s courage that he won’t leave the king’s side anymore.
Essexe companion: Rollo
You meet Rollo after doing a bit of the Essexe arc. Eventually, you’re presented a choice on which of his lieutenants to accuse of treachery — what is it with disloyal lieutenants anyway?
As far as I know, your choice won’t really matter. Once the arc is completed, Rollo will still end up joining your raiding crew.
Snotinghamscire companion: Vili
Vili is Eivor’s childhood friend and the two meet once more in Snotinghamscire. There are two dilemmas here.
The first occurs when the old counselor, Trygve, wishes to join the dead jarl in the afterlife. Tell him not to do that.
Much later in the arc, the Althing will happen. You get to choose who becomes the next jarl: Vili or Trygve. Choose Trygve to lead his clan so that Vili is free to go on an adventure with you.
Note: Prior to this, Eivor will have a moment with Vili and the two could even flirt around.
What exactly do your unique raiding crew companions do?
These unique companions in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey don’t really have additional sidequests down the line. However, they offer something else that’s even more beneficial: additional immersion.
When you have them selected as part of your raiding crew, and you start sailing around, you can choose “follow the river/coast” and press “T” to have someone tell a story.
Remember when only the skald, Bragi, who used to do that? Now, you’ve got more options.
Their dialogue lines play randomly, but listening to them is fun nonetheless.
Finnr talks about the time when he fought alongside Halfdan Ragnarsson. Meanwhile, Birna talks about various sagas and love. As for Rollo, well, he’s just one horny dude.
