Folks playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on PC might be missing something. They may not have even noticed what’s gone, due to it being a rather behind-the-scenes absence. Trophies, challenges, achievements, whatever players want to call them, they aren’t present in Ubisoft’s latest Assassin’s Creed title, and it’s no mistake.
No more achievement hunting
Responding to confused players in the Ubisoft forums, an employee stated that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will be getting something else in lieu of achievements. “Achievements will not be available for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on PC,” said Ubisoft support staff member Ubi-Baron. “Instead with the launch of Ubisoft Connect our new titles will use the Challenges system in place of Achievements.” That’s right, this change isn’t just for this game, it’s for all Ubisoft games on PC going forward.
That answer didn’t sit quite right with a lot of users in the thread. Some questioned when the challenges system would be fully rolled out for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla while others were more concerned about cross-platform progression and achievements transferring over to their consoles. Ubisoft has not responded to any of those questions at the time of writing. Some achievement hunting players in the thread have held off on playing the game until the challenges system is fully in place.
Once it’s fully integrated, challenges will provide players with the means to continue earning rewards in Ubisoft Connect, like legendary weapons, costumes and other cosmetics. By completing a challenge, players earn XP that levels them up in Ubisoft Connect, and with each level up, players earn units that can be spent on rewards.
The sudden change certainly comes as a shock. The traditional achievement system has been a staple of Ubisoft titles on PC. That goes double for games like Assassin’s Creed, that have large completionist fanbases. It certainly doesn’t help that Watch Dogs: Legion, another Ubisoft title that released on October 29, features both achievements and challenges.
