Assassin’s Creed 3 is being developed with a new engine known as AnvilNext.
According to Assassin’s Creed IP development manager Tommy Francois, AnvilNext allows the dev team to include over 2,000 characters on-screen at any one time, implement a dynamic weather system and completely overhaul the animation system.
AnvilNext is an upgrade from the Anvil engine which was used to build Assassin’s Creed 2, AC: Brotherhood and AC: Revelations, which itself was an upgrade from the Scimitar engine used on the first Assassin’s Creed.
We’ve just published an in-depth preview on Assassin’s Creed 3, which looks at what the engine is capable of in a little more detail and explores many of the game’s other elements.
Check out our in-depth AC3 preview.
