Amalur studio in financial talks with Rhode Island

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

The state of Rhode Island is reportedly working with Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios “on different issues”, most likely relating to the $75 million USD guaranteed loan that the developer was offered as part of a deal to relocate from Massachusetts.
That ‘guaranteed’ loan means that Rhode Island will assume the debt of 38 Studios if the business goes under, suggesting that the state has some concerns that this may be in danger of happening.
38 Studios released the RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning earlier this year which, according to figures from NPD, sold 410,000 copies at retail in the US. Those numbers don’t account for any other regions and also fail to include any digital PC sales, so it’s difficult to say how accurate they are.
“We’re working with 38 Studios on different issues. That’s all I can report right now,” said Rhode Island Govenor Lincoln Chafee in a statement.
38 Studios brought more than 160 jobs to the state when it opened its doors in April of 2011. In addition to Kingdoms of Amalur the studio is said to be working on an MMO project, and ultimately has plans to increase its workforce to 450 or more.
