All Poison-type Pokémon weaknesses, explained

Picking your poison...

Pokémon trainers know they will catch all sorts of critters, regardless of the region they’re exploring and the particular Pokémon game they happen to be playing. One of the more fearsome varieties they might encounter is the Poison-type Pokémon, which makes mincemeat of even tough rivals thanks to the use of effective status ailments. Here is our guide explaining all Poison-type Pokémon weaknesses.

Pokémon – all Poison-type weaknesses

Whether you are playing Pokémon Go, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, or some other title entirely, a Poison-type Pokémon in your opponent’s roster is bad news. They take very little damage from a variety of elements, and they thrive when fights last past the first round or two. The list of Poison-type Pokémon weaknesses contains two main items: Ground and Psychic.

If you have a monster of your own that uses the Ground or Psychic element, pit that critter against any pure Poison-type Pokémon. They’ll shrug off more conventional attacks from elements of my favorite type: Fire. They don’t remotely mind the Fairy and Grass elements, or any others you might possess besides Ground and Psychic. Also, as you might expect, they’re strong against their own element.

Most of the Poison-type Pokémon you encounter aren’t limited to just the one element. They’re mixed with something else, and that point actually works in your favor. On the offensive, you can target the secondary element with more of your favorite attacks. The elemental mix ensures you have a better chance of doing some real damage with a super effective attack.

If you plan to battle other trainers, choose your team composition carefully. Make sure to bring a high-level monster to deal damage any Poison-type Pokémon your opponent might bring. A Steel- or Psychic-type Pokémon can also resist most attacks of that other element, when you need to play defense. Poison is useful enough in general that you can practically count on a high-level adversary adding it to the mix. Don’t let anyone catch you off guard, now you know how to respond.
