In a post on the official Survios website, the developer has has announced that it is working on a new Aliens game. Survios describes this upcoming title as an “intense single-player, action horror game.” It has yet to confirm a release date, but Survios will reveal more details about the project at the Alien: Expanding a Dark and Frightening Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
Surivios’ chief product officer TQ Jefferson provides some insight as to what fans can expect. Jefferson describes the Aliens universe as “distinct and terrifying,” which he believes compliments his studio’s expertise. The California-based studio specializes in creating virtual reality experiences which lends itself well to horror.
Aliens license owner 20th Century Games seems equally eager about the prospect of an immersive game in the franchise, with vice president Luigi Priore praising the project. Priore states that he is “thrilled to work with a team like Survios,” highlighting the developer’s passion for the Alien franchise as a particular highlight.
The Aliens action-horror game looks to be some way off. Survios is hiring across a wide range of key roles that will be necessary to create a good Aliens game. This includes positions such as lead game designer and narrative director. Given this, Aliens is likely very early in development and won’t release for at least a few years. Even so, the prospect of a new single-player Aliens game is exciting.
A mixed bag
With the Aliens franchise being passed around so many studios throughout history, it’s unsurprising that the games we’ve gotten have been so mixed. Isolation saw well received. Even 2010’s Aliens vs. Predator received reasonable reviews. On the other hand, Aliens: Colonial Marines is an infamous example of overpromising and false advertising. So much so that it led two fans to file a lawsuit against Gearbox claiming foul play.
