‘A Kinect shooter would be horribly boring’, says Ghost Recon dev

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

Kinect and the ‘hardcore’ (I hate that term) audience continue to have an awkward relationship. As of yet, there has not been a game that has featured Kinect as its central control scheme that has garnered widespread praise from the *sigh* hardcore.
Child of Eden is the closest we’ve probably come, but sold about as well as frying pan made of ice. Ubisoft’s upcoming Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is going down a similar route to Forza Motorsport 4 and included the motion control system as a means of input in specific areas of the game – in this case the weapon customisation ‘gunsmith’ mode.
We recently caught up with Future Soldier’s producer, Yann Suquet, and asked him whether or not we thought a shooter based entirely on Kinect was possible.
“Kinect has always been considered a system for casual games… dancing games, for example,” began Suquet. “But (with gunsmith) we’ve brought it to a hardcore audience and proven that it can be done. Will the next game be completely playable with Kinect? I don’t know the answer to that.
“I think a Kinect shooter would be horribly boring because the system is limited to movement, whereas a shooter needs to be fast and allow you to react quickly. With Kinect you just can’t move fast enough for that. We do want to implement it further, but I don’t think we’ll have a Kinect-based shooter with this particular technology.”
So, there you go. It would be boring on the Kinect in its current form.
Today has also seen the publishing of our latest hands-on preview of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Read it here.
