3D Realms, developers of the extremely long-awaited Duke Nukem Forever, are closing their doors.A source, speaking to Shacknews, commented that the closure is due to funding issues. This has since been confirmed by Duke Nukem Forever publisher Take-Two.”We can confirm that our relationship with 3D Realms for Duke Nukem Forever was a publishing arrangement, which did not include ongoing funds for development of the title,” according to Take-Two’s vice president of communications, Alan Lewis. “In addition, Take-Two continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever.”Furthermore, 3D Realms’ webmaster, Joe Siegler, stated on the official forums “It’s not a marketing thing. It’s true. I have nothing further to say at this time.”Apparently, this came as quite a shock to most at 3D Realms, as Siegler was seemingly unaware of the closure during a recorded interview the day before. “When I recorded that, I didn’t know,” hecommented in reference to said interview.Apogee Software and Deep Silver have stated that this has not affected the forthcoming handheld Duke Nukem Trilogy game.Whether this means DNF will never see the light of day, or will be completed by another company at Take-Two’s behest, is unknown. We’ll keep you updated, but in the meantime, have a look at this list of things that have occured since Duke Nukem Forever was announced.
