An investment management firm has stepped in and acquired Sony Online Entertainment (SOE,) creating a new independent studio.
Investment management company Columbus Nova has acquired SOE in deal announced today. With the acquisition comes a name change, and SOE will now be known as Daybreak Game Company.
The now independent studio say they will “continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multi-platform gaming company.”
As far as players of SOE titles are concerned, there will be little change. The studio say they will continue on current development and projects (such as H1Z1) as usual. They also point out that due to the acquisition there will likely be more resources available to the studio and there will be room to expand existing IPs as they can “now fully embrace the multi-platform world we are living in.”
There are no further details on what was paid for SOE. Based on the information released, a big focus will be placed on multi-platform releases in the future. That may not mean much in the PC realm (unless PC support slips,) as SOE were already pretty committed to this platform to begin with.
