The remake of one of the best point-and-click adventures of old, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, has got a new trailer and screenshots for Gamescom.
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition, which hereafter I will probably just call “the Gabriel Knight remake”, puts you in the shoes of New Orleans bookstore owner and struggling writer Gabriel Knight. Knight isn’t having much luck writing a horror novel but when he starts investigating a bizarre series of ritualistic voodoo murders to give him ideas for the book… well, things go a bit awry, and Knight soon learns that not only is there a lot more going on than was initially apparent, but it might be tied into his recurring nightmares and his mysterious family history. Suddenly, writing a best-selling novel is the least of his worries.
The original was an utterly superb point-and-click adventure with excellent atmosphere, superb writing, a unique story with a number of solid twists, and generally decent puzzles that actually relied more on you investigating than on you using a rollerskate on a plastic UFO. Then there was the tomb wall puzzle and the timed sequence in Day 9, both of which can piss off.
I have no idea whether or not the remake will live up to the original, but it certainly looks good. Every location in the below screenshots and trailer is recognisable, barring perhaps the outside of the police station, which I believe is entirely new. That, or I’ve had a brain leak.
The Gabriel Knight remake is being developed by Jane Jensen’s Pinkerton Road studio, which pretty much guarantees an amount of authenticity as Jensen is the original creator of the game. Alas, it sounds like the original voice recording (featuring Tim Curry, Mark Hamill, Leah Remini, Michael Dorn, and the late Efram Zimbalist Jr.) isn’t being used, with all-new actors and actresses filling in those rather massive shoes. I don’t know that anyone can do Knight as well as Tim Curry, sadly, but we’ll see how the new chap fares.
Last I heard, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers 20th Anniversary Edition was due out this year. Presumably, it still is.
