Here’s an interesting release; a version of Colin McRae Rally has just appeared on Steam. It has the usual complement of modern day Steam trimmings, including achievements and trading cards, but the question is this: which version of Colin McRae is it, exactly?

According to some developer responses in this Steam community thread, “the bulk of it is from CMR 2.0 just made more shiny” and the game is running in the Unity engine. When questioned about similarities to a recent mobile port of the game, the same developer states “While it shares a lot with the mobile version we have done a lot of work on the handling and graphics to make it look/feel the best we can on PC/mac.”

So, I guess the answer to the question would have to be “some kind of new hybrid version of Colin McRae Rally.”

For your $7.00, you get thirty rally stages in four different cars: the Subaru Impreza, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI, Lancia Stratos and Colin McRae’s Ford Focus. Without much background in this series and without having played this version myself, I can’t say for sure whether it’ll bring back those wistful nostalgic memories of arcade racers from times past. It might, though.
