If you missed the 27 June update on the Dreamfall Chapters Kickstarter page, the latest from the game is that it’ll be an episodic release. Considering it’s already named Dreamfall Chapters that’s not much of a stretch. In fact, Ragnar Tørnquist mentions in the post that the game was originally intended to be released as episodes anyway.
That approach changed at the beginning of the Kickstarter, but has now changed back again as the game is more ambitious in scope. Here’s how Ragnar explains it:
While, as a small studio, we are capable of producing a massively ambitious game like Dreamfall Chapters, we’re not satisfied with our ability to properly finish, polish and bug fix the whole game in one go … since our story is already divided into five books, this felt like the natural way to break it up. The shorter wait between books will also, we hope, be easier to endure.
This is not going to change the game’s story. The five Books will tell the story we always intended to tell; a story that concludes the Dreamer Cycle and Zoë Castillo’s role in The Longest Journey saga…but not the saga itself. (Yep, there’s more to come.)
Naturally, both Kickstarter and Paypal backers will receive all of the five episodes free of charge as and when they come out. The first ‘book’ is due in Autumn, and Red Thread says they “will work very hard to keep the wait between books as brief as possible.” Book two is said to already be in alpha testing, with book three “not far behind.”
To accompany this change to the structure of Dreamfall Chapters‘ release schedule, Red Thread has released a new trailer.
