Jordan Mechner’s sublime investigate-’em-up The Last Express has just been re-released on Steam in a Gold Edition, providing you another chance to pick up one of the best games you’ve never heard of.
The Last Express is set on the Orient Express’ final journey in July 1914, right before the outbreak of World War I. You play Robert Cath, an American doctor sought by the French police, who receives an urgent telegram from his friend Tyler Whitney. Cath boards the Orient Express to meet Whitney, but finds him murdered.
It’s a fantastic little game that provides you with a solid mystery, a colourful cast of characters, and a little microcosm of the events that caused World War I… plus real-time progression, the ability to rewind time, and multiple paths and opportunities to add to the replayability. I could go on and on about it, but Peter did that a few years ago (although as that page is from an old version of our site, I’m afraid it’s not formatted correctly).
The Gold Version of The Last Express offers an advanced hint system, cloud saving, achievements, an improved UI and inventory, and in-game bonuses like character biographies. It’ll cost you £3.74 until 2 December, when the price will rise to £4.99.
