Ubisoft have stated that they have an end in mind for the long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag game director Ashraf Ismail said that the franchise heads have a rough idea of how the series will close.

“We have multiple development teams, then we have the brand team that sits on top and is filled with writers and designers concerned with the series’ overall arc. So there is an overall arc, and each iteration has its place inside this,” he explained.

“We have an idea of where the end is, what the end is.”

Of course, we’re not likely to see this soon. Ismail added “But of course Yves [Guillemot, Ubisoft’s CEO] announced we are a yearly title; we ship one game a year. So depending on the setting, depending on what fans want, we’ve given ourselves room to fit more in this arc.

“But there is an end.”

Which… sort of makes it sound like more games will equal more filler, which is probably not the sort of message Ubisoft were wanting to send out. However! There is an upside.

Ismail continued by explaining that this gives them more space to hint at this. “We’re now able to seed stuff earlier and earlier in our games. So for example in [AC4] we have Edward, who was seeded in AC3. But there’s a lot more stuff in our game that is hinting at other possibilities.”

Which is sure to get lore fans scouring the minutiae of the entire game, looking for hints to the future. Still no release date of the PC version of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, but we’re certain it’ll be after the console version’s launch at the end of October.
