Gearbox bought the Homeworld IP in the THQ auction back in April, expressing initial plans to “[make] them accessible on today’s leading digital platforms.” Guess what they’re doing, according to a panel at PAX East?
Yup: current plans are to bring both Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to various digital platforms (with Steam being name-dropped, obviously). Happily, both games will be getting HD updates, upgrading the ships and making everything look slightly more spiffing than the decade-old games currently do.
If you don’t fancy the HD updates and just want the originals, exactly as they were, then fear not – you’ll be able to get hold of both games exactly as they were, too.
There’s no due date for any of this, though. Gearbox stated that they’ve pretty much only just started looking at the code they have and figuring out how much work it’s going to take, so I wouldn’t expect it just yet.
