The Dawntrail story has several notable difficulty spikes, but few are as challenging as playing Wuk Lamat. There’s a lot to cover, so let me explain how to beat Bakool Ja Ja The Mighty as Wuk Lamat in FFXIV Dawntrail.
How to fight as Wuk Lamat in FFXIV Dawntrail
Shortly after beating the second Dungeon, you’re tasked with fighting Bakool Ja Ja The Mighty. The catch is the battle is a 1v1, and you must play as a character with unique skills you’ve never used before. I’ll explain the fight mechanics in a moment, but let’s go over Wuk Lamat’s skills first.
I’ve labeled all six of Wuk Lamat’s Skills in the image above, and here’s what they do:
- #1 Tail of the Br’aax combo: Basic combo attack, which grants a small healing burst on the third hit.
- #2 Turali Judgment combo: Basic attack combo, although it doesn’t give healing.
- #3 Luwatena Pulse: Increases maximum HP and provides healing. You must use this to survive the encounter, and it’s on a 30-second cooldown.
- #4 Beak of Luwatena: Wuk Lamat’s basic ranged attack.
- #5 Run of Rroneek: An attack with a built-in gap-closer. This is a great mobility option to quickly avoid an AOE.
- #6 Limit Break: Use this whenever it’s available.
I primarily relied on the Tail of the Br’aax combo skill and used Luwatena’s Pulse whenever it was off cooldown. Wuk Lamat can use her Limit Break fairly often, and you’re meant to use it whenever it’s ready as it replenishes your health. The battle against Bakool Ja Ja isn’t your typical boss fight where you save your Limit Break until the end, so use it whenever you can.
Finally, if the battle is causing you grief, you can turn the difficulty down after losing for the first time.
How to beat the Bakool Ja Ja Duty in FFXIV Dawntrail
Wuk Lamat plays like a Tank, so don’t be afraid to take a few hits. That said, you should avoid Bakool Ja Ja’s critical attacks, so here’s what to look out for:
Roar
Roar is a typical Raid-Wide attack that will hit you regardless of location. There’s no counterplay, but use Luwatena’s Pulse to heal if required.
Lethal Swipe
You’ll definitely get hit by this attack the first time, as the AOE marker suddenly appears when the ability is charged. Fortunately, all you have to do is move behind Bakool Ja Ja to avoid the attack.
The boss uses this ability often, so you’re encouraged to stay close to dodge it.
Magicked Standard
Bakool Ja Ja can summon several fiery orbs into the arena. These will explode with a large AOE a short while after being cast. The orbs aren’t a threat on their own, but they are much worse when combined with the Kickdown attack.
Later on, Magicked Standard will spawn more Orbs, some of which will be green. You can stand near green Orbs, and they provide a safe spot against the Boss’s more desperate attacks.
Kickdown
Kickdown doesn’t do much damage by itself, but it throws you across the map. You can guide your trajectory by changing the direction you’re facing, so avoid any hazards and orbs as best you can.
Fireshower
Fireshower litters the arena in large AOEs you must avoid. The Fireshower hurts, but the ability isn’t too difficult to avoid on its own. Unfortunately, the boss usually combines it with another attack, making dodging much more difficult.
Great Leap
I died to Great Leap the first time, so don’t sweat it if your first attempt ends here. Great Leap has an enormous AOE and deals a ridiculous amount of damage.
Every time Great Leap is cast, it’s usually with something else, which makes dodging pretty chaotic. Start moving away from Bakool Ja Ja the moment you see this ability charging.
Shadow Siblings
Shadow Siblings is irritating as you won’t know what it does the first time you see it. The boss can create several doppelgangers to confuse you while performing regular attacks.
In the image above, you can see Shadow Siblings has been cast, followed by Lethal Swipe. The giveaway is the glowing red aura, which indicates your target.
Riotous Rampage
You may recall a similar attack from the Gulool Ja Ja battle. The boss will spawn several towers, which you must stand by to remain safe. There are multiple towers, and Bakool Ja Ja will lunge at whichever one you’re near and destroy it.
If you’re fast, you can safely run to each tower to avoid most incoming damage.
Supreme Standard
If you’ve made it this far, you’ve got the boss on the ropes. Supreme Standard is a cinematic attack where you’re locked in place and must mash buttons to survive.
Compared to other FFXIV mashing sections, this one isn’t too bad, and you don’t have to spam inputs for long. If you survive the attack, the boss calls a group of Hired Thugs to his aid.
I used the Beak of Luwatena ranged attack for these enemies, but you can use whatever you like here. As the boss grows more desperate, he will cast AOEs into the mix, but mind your footing, and you’ll emerge victorious!
There are plenty of attacks to memorize during the battle, but your health is the most crucial resource to manage. It’s ok to pull back and rely on your ranged abilities if it will stop you from losing the battle. As there are no checkpoints, it really stings if you die in the second half of the fight, so take your time.
If you’re running into performance issues during the battle, keep in mind that Dawntrail has undergone a massive graphics overhaul. Your settings can make all the difference, so it may be worth browsing the options.
