If you are going to brick one of your items, you might as well do so before you go bankrupt. Here is why you should temper your items before you enchant them in Diablo 4.
Diablo 4: Temper your items before you enchant them
Enchanting your items in Diablo 4 is not to be confused with imprinting Aspects. The latter makes use of the Codex of Power to imprint specific Aspects to your gear, while the former – and the topic of today – will change one of your gear’s Affixes to a new one or even replace it with the same one but with better or worse stats. Now, the thing about enchanting is that it can get really expensive, especially if RNG isn’t in your favor. This is of vital importance in Season 4 since Gold isn’t as common as it was in previous seasons.
So, why would you want to wait to enchant your items before you temper them? Well, because, while enchanting your items can be done an infinite amount of times – which will get more expensive every single time – while tempering can only be done up to five times – even less if your item features fewer rerolls. So, why would you spend a lot of money enchanting an item that will end up getting bricked because you didn’t get your tempering right?
Diablo 4: Tempering, explained
If you don’t know how Tempering works, I don’t blame you, it is both a bit confusing and a new feature introduced in Diablo 4 Season 4. Tempering is effectively a slot machine of a mechanic. You will first have to collect Temper Manuals that have an assortment of effects you can apply to your items. When you visit a Blacksmith and you choose said Temper Manual – which can be reused indefinitely – one of these effects will be tempered to your gear.
The trick is getting the effect that works best with your build. For example, why would you use an Iron Maiden buff – the skill, not the British heavy metal band – if your Necromancer build is based on Corpse Explosion and doesn’t use Iron Maiden? It becomes a useless effect, so your course of action will be to reroll your tempering. As said above, you can only reroll up to five times depending on your reroll value, and you can still get effects that won’t work for you.
So, if you wish to have the best item possible, you are better off tempering it first. That way, if you end up bricking the item, then you can save yourself the money and items and avoid enchanting it, which cannot be undone if you enchant them first. That way, you will get the best class build possible, which is a game of choice and luck in Diablo 4.
