All characteristics in Baladins, explained and ranked

Start with the right Baladin!

When doing anything in Baladins, your characteristics are taken into account. You will fail or succeed thanks to the value of your characteristics, so choosing the right Baladin and training the right characteristics are key.

How every characteristic works in baladins

Taking a cue from role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, Baladins has a difficulty class system, where actions can only be succeeded if you roll high enough.

For every action you perform, three six-sided dice will be rolled and added together. If the value is higher than the difficulty class value for the action, you’ll succeed. However, every action has a characteristic associated with it.

Your Baladin will have values associated with every characteristic, which can be modified throughout your run. After rolling for an action, the value of the matching characteristic for the action will be added to the roll. So the higher a characteristic, the better your roll for actions using that characteristic.

Throughout Baladins, there will be a litany of actions you need to perform. Unlike other RPGs, the characteristics themselves don’t do anything else other than add to rolls for those certain actions. So don’t worry about increasing a characteristic you’re not likely to use for that run.

The characteristics in Baladins are:

  • Physique – for actions requiring strength.
  • Finesse – for actions requiring cunning, luck, or conversation.
  • Knowledge – for actions requiring wisdom or intelligence.
  • Creativity – for actions requiring imagination, improvisation, or performing.
  • Destruction – for actions requiring intimidation or general havoc.

The different Baladins will have a different set of values for each characteristic when starting a run, so choose the Baladin that suits the actions you plan on doing for your next run. Don’t get too attached to one Baladin!

What are the most useful characteristics in Baladins?

I went into Baladins choosing the Pyro, as I assumed that a more aggressive playstyle would be better for a solo adventure. However, I was very wrong. I’ve encountered some characteristics much more than others, making some more generally useful to use if you don’t have a plan of action.

The most useful characteristics in Baladins

Surprisingly, the characteristics that I’ve seen come up most frequently on my runs are Knowledge and Creativity. While there is usually an alternate way to complete the task, these two appear pretty often.

There are many opportunities where you must perform or solve a problem, and these two come in handy. I always find myself trying to improve these characteristics no matter what character I play, in case they pop up unexpectedly.

For this reason, the Cook or Luxomancer may be good choices for runs without a plan of action.

No matter what characteristics you decide to improve upon in your run, don’t worry, as there will always be an opportunity to use them to help you out. Need Royal Jelly in Baladins? We’ve got a guide for that, too.
