Best team formations for every situation in AFK Journey

Use the playbook.

Your team’s starting formation in AFK Journey is the dealbreaker between a crushing defeat and a monumental victory. Even a top-tier team organized poorly will fail if it’s put together poorly. That is why you need to know the best formation strategies for AFK Journey.

Best basic formations

There are a few basic rules to follow when putting your AFK Journey formation together. Provided the setup is the regular one without walls, I would recommend this.

  • Front row—Tanks. I recommend Thoran, Antandra, and Lumont. You want these guys taking the brunt of the damage. Players like Antandra will draw fire and provide shielding for the softer members of the team.
  • Mid – This level needs your Rogues, Warriors, and Support. Some of these can be put to the front, depending on how well they deal with damage. Mid-players should be able to play backward and forward. I would ensure that Rowan is kept in the middle, as their moves are primarily AOE. This will result in the buffs being handed out to all members of the team. However, you could have Korin in the front of your AFK Journey formation due to his shielding capabilities.
  • Back row – For the perfect team placement, you should look to keep your Healers, Mages, and Marksmen at the back. Anyone with range will invariably have a low health bar, and you need to protect your Healers at all costs. Two characters I never moved from the back row of my AFK Journey formation were Hewynn and Cecia. They rarely need to move as they work primarily on summons and long-range healing.

Walled AFK Journey formation tips

You will often find that you come up against walls and barricades when playing AFK Journey. This can cause issues with the basic formations, but there is always a way to work with it. You may find it works in your favor.

  • Channel Enemies – Look for choke points in the layout of the map and use this to your advantage. You can cause a lot of damage by putting a heavy character in the gap to provide either shielding or a wall of damage. I found putting Temesia in the choke point of a formation allowed her to channel enemies and run them all flat with her Knights Heart ultimate.
  • Utilize the obstacles – If they don’t have ranged attacks, they can’t shoot over walls either. So, ensure you have some ranged characters in your AFK Journey formation, and you’ll be able to pick off foes from afar. Our Queen and savior, Vala, can jump through obstacles to attack targets. You can use this to ambush enemies in cover.
  • Divide and conquer – Walls can be used to split enemies up into manageable chunks. I have found that having two mini-teams on either side of a splitting wall works very well to my advantage. Have a small team of DPS, Tank, and Healer on each side, and bam, you have two unstoppable teams.
