Should you start a new world for the Stardew Valley 1.6 Update?

Don't worry, your chickens are safe.

The Stardew Valley 1.6 update adds a ton of content to the game and some features will affect you no matter how far you are into the game. With this in mind, let me answer the question: Should you start a new world for the Stardew Valley 1.6 Update?

Do I need a new world for the Stardew Valley 1.6 update?

Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe (aka Eric Barone) has explained how the update works, and even given his own answer to this question. The 1.6 Update will work with any existing saves, so fear not; that incredible Winery you spent hundreds of hours on is perfectly safe.

However, Concerned Ape recommends starting a new file so you can experience all the extra content in context. The update also includes a new farm layout, which can only be enjoyed with a fresh save file.

Details on the 1.6 Update are scarce as the developers are keen not to spoil anything, but we do know the patch is scheduled for March 19.

The main takeaway is that this update isn’t as large as 1.5 was, but it is substantial nonetheless. I’m going to list all the revealed content below. There are no massive spoilers here, but if you want to experience everything completely fresh, you may not want to look at the list:

Stardew Valley 1.6 upcoming changes

  • A new major festival
  • Two mini-festivals
  • New late-game content
  • New items and crafting recipes
  • Joja alternatives to some questlines
  • Over 100 new lines of dialogue
  • Villagers have Winter outfits
  • New rewards for completing billboard requests
  • 8-player co-op (PC only at the time of writing)
  • New starting Farm layout
  • New secrets
  • Multiple minor adjustments and additions

ConcernedApe has said he will reveal full patch notes on release day. There’s a ton to look forward to, and I’m keen to try out the new farm layout. Stardew Valley is already packed full of secrets, so it’s great they are adding even more and the new dialogue should make the game feel fresh for veterans.
