The first major section of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a flashback set in Nibelheim, the town where Cloud and Tifa grew up together. As you explore the town and eventually enter Tifa’s house, you’ll be given the chance to snoop and look through her belongings. Should you?
The Nibelheim flashback in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has a lot of moments like this, where Cloud will approach something and the party will ask what he did with it. Some of these moments, like visiting Cloud’s mom, are required to progress through the story. Even though you’re required to visit Tifa’s house to continue the main question, do you really need to go through her stuff to move forward?
What Happens If You Go Through Tifa’s Stuff in FF7 Rebirth?
When you enter Tifa’s house in the Nibelheim flashback at the beginning of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, things start out normal enough. As you move throughout her house and get closer to her room, however, both she and Aerith will get increasingly upset with Cloud’s behavior. This culminates in the choice to go through her stuff or not, which is a hard decision for most Rebirth players.

You don’t need to go through Tifa’s stuff to continue the main storyline. You have to explore her house and discover the piano in her bedroom, but going through her things is entirely optional. There aren’t any major consequences to doing so, though, so you can open her dresser as long as you’re okay with Tifa and Aerith thinking you’re a little weird.
If you’d rather not go through Tifa’s things, then you can choose the dialogue option that says “No, I was making a joke.” You can choose a similar dialogue option when exploring other parts of Nibelheim during the flashback, but most of those encounters are required for the flashback to continue. Going through Tifa’s stuff is one of the few optional parts of this chapter. Even if you do decide to look through Tifa’s things, however, it won’t affect your relationship levels or anything like that.
