Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: How to beat Drayton’s Elite Trial in The Indigo Disk

Of all the Elite Trials in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet The Indigo Disk, Drayton’s is by far the most difficult to complete. Why? Well, because you will have to defeat three of Drayton’s assistants. You might be thinking “Hey, that’s super easy, with my top Pokémon I can decimate every trainer that stands before me,” and that’s good and all, but there’s a catch. You will only get to pick the Pokémon you have caught in the Blueberry Academy Terrarium. Yes, only the Pokémon you have picked during this DLC can partake in these fights, rendering your Paldea and Kitakami Pokémon useless.

There are a lot of possible Pokémon you can pick to fight each of these battles, so let’s take a look at each of the assistant’s Pokémon so that you can build a team that will defeat them easily. Note that each of their Pokémon will be level 68, so you can bring Terrarium Pokémon that surpass their level to have an advantage from the get-go.

Ray the Student’s Pokémon

PokémonTypeWeakness
MagnezoneElectric/Steel4x Ground
2x Fire
2x Fighting
ZebstrikaElectric2x Ground

As you can see, both of Ray’s Pokémon are weak to Ground types. When facing him, be sure to target Magnezone first since it has 4x weakness against Ground attacks. You can then use the remainder of the battle to get rid of Zebstrika. Do not bring Pokémon that are weak to Electric or Steel types.

Winter the Student’s Pokémon

PokémonTypeWeakness
Alolan SandslashIce/Steel4x Fire
2x Fighting
2x Ground
DewgongWater/Ice2x Grass
2x Electric
2x Fighting
2x Rock

Winter has an Alolan Sandslash and Dewgong that share the same type of weakness: Fighting. Fighting Pokémon like Blaziken that also are Fire types will be extremely useful in this encounter since the Alolan Sandslash has a 4x Fire weakness on top of the 2x Fighting one.

Craig the Student’s Pokémon

PokémonTypeWeakness
Bastiodon Rock/Steel4x Fighting
4x Ground
2x Water
RampardosRock2x Water
2x Grass
2x Fighting
2x Ground
2x Steel

In the case of Craig, both of his Pokémon share a Fighting and Ground weakness. Unfortunately, there isn’t a single Pokémon that has a Fighting/Ground type. We can instead pick Virizion or Cobalion. Both will share the Fighting type and will exploit Rampardos’s weakness to Steel and Grass, respectively.

Choose your Pokémon wisely and be prepared to defeat all of Drayton’s assistants. You won’t get to rest afterward, as you will then have to fight Drayton himself, and he does have a powerful arsenal of Pokémon at his disposal. Spoiler: he likes Dragon types quite a lot.
