A decision to make!

Star Ocean has had a long history with recruitable party members, with some being exclusive to certain playthroughs depending on conditions within your playthrough. Here’s our guide on how to recruit Opera in Star Ocean The Second Story R.

Before we start talking about recruiting Opera herself, we have to mention that you cannot get Opera (or Ernest) if you choose to recruit Ashton earlier on in the game. As I mentioned above, this is one of the Star Ocean traditions, where certain characters cannot join in this playthrough, and Opera is one of them in Star Ocean The Second Story R, if you have Ashton in your party.

Recruiting Opera

To be able to recruit Opera in Star Ocean The Second Story R, the first thing you need to do is progress the story to the Armory Contest. In the older versions of the game, the first step was to see a Private Action in Krosse, but thanks to The Second Story R making this a mandatory sub-event on the way to the main objective in Krosse City, this is a skippable step. But if you somehow missed the sub-event with the three-eyed person in Krosse City, you won’t be able to recruit Opera.

Once you complete the Armory Contest in Star Ocean The Second Story R, you’re going to want to head to Hilton. There should be a sub-event available there, this is the sub-event you’re going to want to see to start the process to recruit Opera in Star Ocean The Second Story R. Once you see this scene, this should activate a chain of sub-events.

Sub-events

The first sub-event for recruiting Opera in Star Ocean The Second Story R will be in Krosse Castle, and then after talking to the King, you’ll gain access to the Mountain Palace, and there will be another sub-event marker for finding Opera. After a conversation, she will join the party, but continue her side quest inside the Mountain Palace as she joins officially after that. I’m not sure whether she stays forever if you don’t complete the side quest, as I completed the side quest because I was already in the Mountain Palace.

My one piece of advice is to always complete sub-events in Star Ocean The Second Story R, as in my experience with the game, they’re more-or-less always worth my time. One of them even gives you the weapon you use to craft Claude’s best weapon, so sub-events are always worth it to me. The same goes for Private Actions, too. I love seeing the party interact with each other and getting to know everyone just a bit more.
