Diablo 4: How does auto salvage work?

An auto salvage feature has been a highly sought-after addition to Diablo 4. Getting low-tier items is nothing more than an inconvenience for players at higher difficulties. Seeing that many games already feature this mechanic, it was only a matter of time before it was implemented. Thanks to the 1.2.0 update on October 17, 2023, the auto salvage feature is available for all Diablo 4 players.

It is not an option you can select in a menu. You see, auto salvage is automatically applied to both World Tier III and IV players. Instead of lower-tier equipment and weapons, you will receive crafting resources. Additionally, you will receive more gold overall, which compensates for the bulk of selling of non-desirable drops. Here are more details of what items you can expect to drop depending on the World Tier you play in:

IIIOnly Legendary, Unique, Uber Unique, and Sacred Rare items will drop. Players will instead receive additional crafting resources. Gold drop rates are increased in World Tiers III and IV to balance out these changes.
IVOnly Legendary, Unique, Uber Unique, and Ancestral Rares. Players will instead receive additional crafting resources Gold drop rates are increased in World Tiers III and IV to balance out these changes.

Despite this being an official change, some players have reported that lower-tier items still appear during their playthroughs. It is still unknown whether Blizzard will address this issue or if this is a general issue at all. For the time being, be sure to test auto salvage out in the field in Diablo 4. And by out in the field, I mean during farming for Uber Uniques while facing Endgame bosses.
