Workbenches and labs in Starfield can be difficult to track down if you don’t know where to look. These are the stations you’ll do all your research and crafting at, so you’ll need to visit them often. For convenience, wouldn’t it be nice to have some of them on your ship? Well, you’re in luck, because you can add workbenches and labs on your ship in Starfield, and we’ll show you how.
Starfield: How to add workbenches and labs to your ship
At the start of your Starfield journey, your ship doesn’t offer much. But as you get further into the game and earn more Credits, you’ll get yourself a better ship in no time. If you want labs and workbenches on your ship in Starfield, how you can add them is by purchasing a Hab. Specifically, go for an Infirmary, Mess Hall, Science Lab, or Workshop Hab.
In Starfield, Habs — short for Habitat Modules — are areas in your ship you can walk around and live in. Our guide on Starfield Habs can help you to figure out what types of Habs exist. But in this guide, we just want to focus on the ones that offer you workstations. Each of the ones I’ve listed offer different sets of stations:
- Infirmary: Pharmaceutical and Research Labs
- Mess Hall: Cooking Station
- Science Lab: Pharmaceutical and Research Labs
- Workshop Hab: Weapon, Spacesuit, and Industrial Workbenches, Research Lab

If you add any of these Habs to your ship, you can use the workbenches and labs listed in their features. You should definitely have the Workshop Hab — and the Mess Hall, if you like to cook — but what about the Infirmary and Science Lab? Although the Workshop Hab has a Research Lab, and for the Pharmaceutical Lab, I’d go for the Science Lab. I’m only choosing this over the Infirmary since it also includes a Galley.
How to add a workbench/lab Hab to your ship
But how do you get a Hab? Just talk to any Ship Services Technician by the landing areas of most planets. Ask to edit your ship, enter ship builder, and then select your current Hab. If your ship doesn’t have a Hab, just buy any, because you can change the variation after.
This is what confused me about the Habs because if you try to buy a Workshop Hab, it’s not listed. Instead, edit the Hab you have, and use the left and right arrow keys to change the variant. Mine was originally something else that didn’t provide me anything useful, and I easily switched it to the Workshop Hab.
Starfield is available on Steam and the Microsoft Store.
