In Starfield, you’ll explore dozens of planets throughout the galaxy, if not more. You’ll warp from one system to another, battle space pirates, smuggle illegal goods, and help people settle hostile environments. Sometimes, though, you need a place of your own where you can hang your hat. Accordingly, this guide tells you how to get a house in Starfield.
Starfield – how to get a house
There are a lot of benefits to home ownership in Starfield. In chief, they serve as an excellent base of operations. You can decorate your house with storage crates to keep all your belongings in one place. Then you can research and craft, knowing the resources you need are close at hand. To get a house, you have to buy one that interests you, or pay off your Dream Home.
Your first option may be the Dream Home. If you selected that Trait when you created your character, you start with a house you are paying to own. It is located on Nesoi, a planet in the Olympus system. For more information about that option, see our guide explaining where to find your dream home and how to pay it off.
Another option is to buy a home. You have numerous choices here:
- Purchase a home in New Atlantis after you become a citizen by completing faction missions for UC Vanguard.
- Buy a home in Akila City from the real estate agent.
- Buy a key for a sleep crate in Neon Core. It is one of several crates available in the Ebbside district, and barely counts.
- Purchase a suite in Neon Core from the bartender working at the Astral Lounge.
It’s possible to purchase multiple houses, even within the same city, provided you have sufficient credits. My goal is to have a home or two in every major city, but I spend most of my time in my Dream Home.

Finally, you can also build outposts. These aren’t quite a home, but they work in a pinch. You construct them piece by piece. If you wish, you can add resources and eventually assign crew members. You can use them to mine resources in large quantities, and more. See our guide on how to build outposts in Starfield if you want more information.
Starfield is available to purchase on Steam and the Microsoft Store.
