Are Armored Core 6 and Elden Ring similar? Explained

How much of Elden Ring's influence has seeped into Armored Core?

For about a decade, FromSoftware has exclusively put out lengthy, melee-focused action RPGs with unique mechanics and a penchant for difficulty. But with today’s release of Armored Core 6, the studio has finally branched out from this style of game to put renewed focus on one of its older, long-dormant IPs. Having said that, it seems like a safe assumption that FromSoftware’s experience developing the Souls series and other games like it has influenced Armored Core 6 in certain ways, especially after the release of the enormously successful Elden Ring just last year. Those unfamiliar with Armored Core 6 may wonder just how similar it is to that game.

For the short answer, although Armored Core 6 and Elden Ring do share similarities in design and concept, they ultimately stand as completely separate experiences. Whereas Elden Ring famously represented FromSoftware’s first foray into the open-world genre, the new Armored Core opts for a more linear setup. Additionally, the fast-paced hybrid of ranged and melee combat featured in Armored Core differs quite substantially from Elden Ring’s slower, more melee-centric approach.

Even so, from what I have researched, Armored Core 6 does actually incorporate certain mechanics in Elden Ring that the Armored Core series never saw previously. For instance, Armored Core 6 places more emphasis on melee combat than in previous entries, and the game adds a new hard lock-on feature similar to the one from FromSoftware’s action RPG lineup. The new Armored Core also shares Elden Ring’s focus on challenging boss encounters that reward players for studying moves and exploiting enemy weaknesses.

In general, though, don’t boot up Armored Core 6 expecting Elden Ring but with mechs. The similarities are definitely there, and longtime FromSoftware fans will certainly enjoy spotting them, but Armored Core 6 is a game that will likely best be enjoyed on its own terms.
