Where to find Chest of the Mundane in Baldur’s Gate 3

A deceptive name.

In Baldur’s Gate, you’ll find all sorts of precious treasure. Some of it is impressively named. Some of it is not. But names aren’t everything. Useful loot sometimes has a weird name, as is the case with the Chest of the Mundane. You’ll definitely want to grab it and make your life easier, but it’s not exactly easy to acquire. Here is our guide telling you where to find the Chest of the Mundane in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 – where to find Chest of the Mundane

I hate being overly encumbered. Unfortunately, that tends to happen a lot in Baldur’s Gate 3. I start grabbing loot and the next thing you know, I’m waddling like a duck. But the Chest of the Mundane solves that issue. To find the Chest of the Mundane, you must search the Arcane Tower in the Underdark.

Accessing the Arcane Tower

You can approach the Arcane Tower a number of ways. It rises over the western portion of the Underdark, a long journey west from the Selunite Outpost. See the above map screenshot, which shows Astarion’s location at the front door.

If you’re having trouble reaching the area, check our guide explaining how to get to the Underdark. Heading straight west upon arriving can be dangerous. You might prefer to disable the Eyes of Selune and travel northwest to Myconid Colony. Then you can journey south to a waypoint not far from the tower. The early part of our guide telling you how to access the Harper Stash describes the journey from Selunite Outpost to the Beach waypoint.

From the Beach waypoint, travel slightly north along the wooden scaffolding and ascend the slopes to the east to reach the area outside the Arcane Tower. Now you must deal with turrets in turn-based battle. They fire projectiles that slowly chip away at your life if you leave yourself in the open. You need to either disable the turrets or use abilities such as Pass Without Trace to sneak past them and ascend the stairs. I prefer to Dash from one cover point to another.

At the top of the stairs, pick the lock on the building’s Ornate Door to enter the Arcane Tower’s interior.

Finding the Chest of the Mundane

Once you arrive within the Arcane Tower, you must disable or sneak past two more turrets. Use the large stone columns to your advantage. The turrets are positioned near the back left and right sides of the large chamber, which has an elevator near its center.

When the turrets are no longer a threat, exit through the door on the room’s right side to reach its balcony. That’s where you find the Chest of the Mundane. Have someone fairly strong or mostly unencumbered carry it. You can place items within the chest and it significantly reduces their weight. Longer journeys into treasure-rich areas become much easier.

Note: If you’re feeling brave, have one nimble character (like Astarion) make their way into the tower to claim the chest and then escape. That’s what I did on my early run. You can return later when you’re in better shape to explore the entire tower.
