Upon reaching the Adamantine Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3, it can be confusing figuring out how it works. And, once you get the Forge to work, you immediately need to fight Grym, who is a really hard boss. There are certain strategies to this fight many players don’t even know about. Here is how to use the Forge and defeat Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3.
How to use the Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3
After traversing through the Grymforge and Ancient Forge regions in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll finally find the Adamantine Forge, which allows you to create some of the best weapons and armor in the game. As you explore the areas before the Adamantine Forge, look for Moulds and Mithral, like this Splint Mould, as they will be found here and there.
I found Mithral directly north of the Adamantine Forge after cracking open the large blue stone. You’ll be ambushed by a bunch of Magma Mephits, so watch out for that. They are pretty easy to take out. You can find Moulds on the ground scattered about. You’ll find all of them as you make your way to the Adamantine Forge.
Once you’re at the Adamantine Forge, insert any Mould you have into the Mould Chamber, then your Mithral in the Crucible in the middle. Pull the Forge Lever on the south side, and the entire platform will descend to the lower level. Next, go over to the east side and spin the Lava Valve. Now that you know how to use the Forge in Baldur’s Gate 3, let’s move on to how to defeat Grym.
Note: Before you spin the Lava Valve make sure to Short Rest and ungroup your party. Have each member on a different circle, with one near the lever that pulls the Crucible hammer, and one on the Crucible itself.
How to defeat Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3
This technique is a bit of cheese to defeat Grym, but it’s actually the only way to defeat Grym because this is a gimmick boss battle. You can use spells and arrows to defeat Grym, but it has 300 health and will eliminate your party in just a few hits.
The best strategy I used to defeat Grym was to lure it to the middle and pull the lever to slam the Crucible hammer onto it. This will down any party member at the Crucible if they are still there, so if you can, disengage and get off the platform.

Grym puts a status called Prime Target on whoever hit it last, so have the character on the Crucible hit Grym to lure it to the middle. I used Wyll’s Eldritch Blast because, at level 5, he can fire two Eldritch Blast attacks, which helps to not miss. Make sure to stand on the edge of the Crucible so Grym is more centered under the Crucible hammer.
After luring Grym to the center and taking a hit, I used disengage to avoid the Opportunity Attack and jumped onto the Moulding Chamber. I then had my party member pull the Forge Lever to bring down the Crucible hammer. It leaves Grym at 180 health, and four Magma Mephits spawn on the west side of the stage.
While Grym is knocked prone, take out the Magma Mephits. To deal more damage to Grym, you need to turn the lava on and pull the Forge Lever again. Grym won’t be damaged if you swing the Crucible hammer without lava on the field. It’s extremely important to notice that Grym is resistant to practically every single damage type.
Since Grym is resistant to basically everything, the only way to defeat him is with the Crucible hammer and lava. Once you hit Grym with the Crucible hammer with lava on the field, he’ll gain the status Superheated. This makes Grym super vulnerable to Bludgeoning damage, which worked perfectly with my Monk’s unarmed and staff attacks. He takes half Slashing, Piercing, Acid, Thunder, Cold, and Psychic damage, too, but I recommend using Bludgeoning damage to end the fight quickly.
After hitting Grym for a few turns, I lured it into the middle again and, with lava around, pulled the Crucible hammer and killed it even with 150 HP left. Two of my allies went down in the process, but I turned on Turn-Based Mode now that the fight was over and rushed over to help them up.
And just like that, you’ve defeated Grym! Now, you can snag your new forged gear and forge even more equipment. You can also start looking for Infernal Iron to continue romancing Karlach.
