Baldur’s Gate 3 offers a huge world where you can interact with all sorts of characters, objects, and landscape features. Sometimes, you’ll come across mounds of dirt. They clearly are points of interest, but to interact with them, you’ll need the right implement. Here is our guide telling you where to find a shovel in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Note: Yeah, the shovel is a good tool to have, but if you’re just starting out, you’ll benefit even more from learning what the best legendary items, weapons, and armor at in BG3.
Best place to find a shovel in Baldur’s Gate 3
To dig through dirt mounds in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need a shovel. Fortunately, you don’t have to advance very far in the game to find one. The first shovel you can find is located along the northern portion of the Overgrown Ruins, at the Chapel Entrance.
When you begin playing, you find yourself on the Mindflayer ship. Once you clear that initial area, you crash land on a beach. Head north along that beach to find Shadowheart, and potentially join up with her (if you figured out how to rescue Shadowheart in the previous area). Continue along the beach from there until you reach the Ancient Door. It’s locked, but there is a waypoint just ahead of it that you want to activate.
A rock archway grants access to a path that leads southwest from the waypoint. Follow it until you reach a man named Astarion, who stands along the hillside. Recruit him if you like and then travel northeast past the unstable rune. Proceeding in that direction, you’ll soon reach the southern edge of the Chapel Entrance.
Climb the steps and pass through the opening to trigger a scene involving Gimblebock and other treasure hunters. You can either fight them or talk them out of making trouble for you. Then you should proceed north toward a door at the back side of the ruins (past some vines that grab at your feet). Just ahead of the door and to the right, you’ll find the shovel lying on the ground. The map screenshot above shows its precise location.
With the shovel now in your possession, you can dig up every dirt mound you come across in BG3. Unlike Thieves Tools, you only need one shovel for the rest of the game. Some players report their shovels breaking which would mean you need to find another, but in my playthrough, I still use the first shovel I found.
You’ll need more shovels for additional dirt mounds. Sometimes you can find them lying about in other places, such as the goblin camp. Merchants also sometimes sell them for 50 gold. Make sure to keep a supply on hand, especially as you prepare to explore new areas.
