How to unlock the Exterminator in Halls of Torment

No more pest problems.

Halls of Torment starts you out with the generally uninteresting Swordsman, but you won’t have to use him for long if you continue exploring and diving deeper into the various dungeons. One of the coolest characters, the Exterminator, is available fairly quickly. You just have to figure out how to get them to join your team. Here is our guide telling you how to unlock the Exterminator in Halls of Torment.

Halls of Torment – how to unlock the Exterminator

The Exterminator carries around a flamethrower that emits a series of fiery bursts. Appropriately boosted with gear and upgrades, the character quickly turns most enemies into black char. You’ll want to start using them as early as possible. To unlock the Exterminator, kill 1,000 enemies in the the Ember Grounds dungeon before ending your run.

First, unlock the Ember Grounds dungeon by defeating the Imp Chieftain mid-boss in Haunted Cavern. Once you access the new stage, venture inside and save the wellkeeper. That allow you to keep items permanently.

Once you save the wellkeeper, steer clear of the Ember Grounds dungeon. Keep grinding in the Haunted Cavern, where you can more quickly acquire gold to upgrade your archer so they can survive longer in Ember Grounds. I recommend retrieving and purchasing the Collar of Confidence, and equipping it with the Longfinger Gloves. That way, you can deal more damage to enemies as they press around you, and survive longer in runs. The screenshot above shows a good loadout for the archer, early in the game.

Once your archer is toughened up, return to Ember Grounds. You should by now have improved your pickup radius by upgrading some blessings, and it’s also good to enhance attack speed. That way, you’ll survive long enough in Ember Grounds to kill the required 1,000 enemies in a single run. The next time you visit the level hub after tending to that quest, you get to meet the Exterminator.

The Exterminator is an important character with powerful abilities the other characters should also use. As you play with the new character, you’ll find you can access the new Dragon’s Breath ability. It allows you to send out huge waves of fire that tear through enemy forces, independently of your flamethrower. It’s especially useful if you also access and improve the Fire Damage blessing, plus equip related gear. I often use the ability to get far in my runs, regardless of the character I am using at the time. It is lethal.

Halls of Torment is available to purchase on Steam.
