One of the main activities you’ll be partaking in during Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is caring for animals. On your farm, not only can you plant crops, but house a variety of animals to bring in animal products. There are certain things you must know if you want to make sure your animals are happy. Continue reading this animal guide for an in-depth explanation on caring for your animals in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life.
Caring for animals in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life
At the start of your new life in Forgotten Valley, Takakura will give you a Cow for free. This is the only animal you start with, but once you continue playing, you’ll soon buy Chickens and Sheep. Eventually, you can also get Ducks, Goats, and even a Horse. Each animal is worthy of care for different reasons, and you’ll soon find out how to do so in this animal guide for Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life.
Cows
Since this is the first animal you’ll get, we should start here. We already wrote a guide on caring for Cows, so we’ll briefly go over what you need to know here. Any Cow you buy will live inside the barn. Each Cow needs to be cared for in order for them to be happy, and in turn, give you good-quality milk.
Cows will eat Fodder, or Fodder+, which you can purchase from the Ledger outside. Fodder+ is a good occasional treat, but giving it to them too often won’t be good. I try to give my Cows normal Fodder all the time, and every few days throw in a Fodder+. Another way to get Fodder is by planting Fertilizer in the pasture, waiting for the grass to grow, then using a Sickle to harvest it.
Other ways Cows need care are snuggles and brushes. Van the travelling merchant will sell a Brush to you for 1,000 gold. Anytime you see dirt splotches on your Cows, use the Brush to clean them. Also, I try to snuggle my Cows twice a day, and they’ll respond with a heart. The last thing that they love is going outside. In the morning, let the barn animals outside by ringing the bell. Then, by evening, ring the bell again to let them inside.
Looking for more Cows? Read the Ledger, and you should see an array of Cow types. Normal Cows are cheaper than Brown and Marble Cows, which produce different types of Milk. Speaking of Milk, once you build the Processing Room, you can turn Milk into Cheese or Butter, which will sell for more Gold.
Chickens
The cheapest animals are Chickens. Once purchased, you’ll find them inside the coop, and they like to eat Bird Feed. Unlike Cows, Chickens don’t run out of Bird Feed often. Buying a female Chicken will get you an Egg daily, usually by picking them up and seeing if they laid one. If you buy a male Chicken, they may fertilize the female’s Eggs, which you can hatch in the Incubator inside your coop. Or, you can sell the Egg for more Gold than unfertilized ones.
Just like your barn animals, Chickens enjoy being outside. They have a separate bell outside their door. You can also snuggle them, but they don’t seem to get dirty, so don’t worry about needing to brush them.
Sheep
After having just Chickens and Cows, you may want to try something new. Sheep are great for producing Wool, which will sell for 3,000 Gold. They only grow in enough Wool to cut with Clippers every few days.
Depending on how happy your Sheep are, their Wool quality can increase, which is more valuable. Just like Cows, Sheep live in the barn, eat the same Fodder, need outside time, require brushing, and want snuggles.
Horse
You cannot buy these next animals normally through the Ledger, but instead through different means. Luckily, how you can get a horse in Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is automatically. Takakura will eventually give you a Horse, and you can choose its coat color.
Unlike all your other animals, the Horse doesn’t give animal products, and doesn’t really need to be fed. It has a trough, and will require brushing once in awhile, but neglecting it won’t change much. The one thing your Horse is useful for is riding. Riding your horse around Forgotten Valley is much easier than walking.
Ducks
The only way you can get Ducks is by purchasing the Pond. In your Ledger, search for the Pond under Facilities. Once it’s built, and a few days pass, Takakura will find two Ducks. If you have spots in your coop, you can name and keep them. When you call them outside, they’ll usually stick around the new Pond.
Goats
Lastly, there is a way you can buy Goats. During Spring, visit Van, and he will sell a female Goat for 40,000 Gold. Once Spring passes, your chance of getting a Goat is gone until the next Spring. They’ll need a spot in your barn, and are cared for just like your other barn animals. As you probably guessed, Goats can produce Goat Milk.
Animal breeding
The final thing I should touch on is breeding your animals. You can order breeding through the Ledger, or you can let it happen naturally. If you have a set of male and female Cows or Sheep, there’s a chance the female will become pregnant. Talking to the female will tell you something is off, and checking the black chalkboard in your barn will outright tell you if she’s pregnant.
Once the animal is close to giving birth, you should isolate her in the fenced-off area inside the barn. After the baby arrives, you can name them, and they’ll become a new member of the farm. One thing to note is that female Cows and Goats who have recently given birth will produce Mother’s Milk. Use this Milk to feed the newborn, and once they’re fully grown, the mother will produce better quality Milk for a period of time.
