How to complete Closing the Book quest in Diablo 4

How to find those pesky Smoldering Tomes.

Diablo 4 has some great side quests worth exploring, even if you’re already at the end game. Many of these quests have prerequisites, and some are much harder than others. Closing the Book is one of those. This quest has demanding requirements and tasks the player with a tricky collectathon right at the end. If you’re struggling, let me show you how to complete the Closing the Book quest in Diablo 4.

The part that will trip most players up is tracking down four small items to finish the mission. I have images for those below, but if you’re starting the quest, let’s get the prerequisites out of the way first.

‘Closing the Book’ is the final part of the Desperate Remedies questline. You can start the quest by speaking to Elder Lau in the Dismal Foothills of the Hawezar region.

The closest Waypoint is Wejinhani, and Lau is to the east of the settlement. This quest will trigger a straightforward search mission where you must interact with corpses in each location. After that, you’re directed to a nearby Dungeon called Light’s Refuge. Your quest only takes place in the first half of the area, but once you’re done, you can finish the rest of the Dungeon if you wish, as it unlocks the Aspect of Bul-Kathos.

After you’ve finished the quest, you need to clear out a nearby Stronghold. Eriman’s Pyre is a short ride east from Wejinhani. Conquer the Stronghold and return to the Waypoint. With everything in place, you can accept a side quest from Elder Akos, who’s just south of the Wejinhani Waypoint. He asks you to escort him to the Stronghold you just liberated, so ride back there.

At this point, the entire Stronghold becomes a search area, and you need to find four Smoldering Tomes. These items are a pain because they are tiny and conveniently match the color of the charred earth beneath them. Here are the locations; if you don’t see the Tomes immediately, slowly patrol the area on foot. When you get close enough, they will shine.

The 4th Smoldering Tome is the hardest to find because of the coloring. It’s almost entirely invisible unless you walk close enough for its outline to shine. With every Tome in your possession, you can return to the Wejinhani Waypoint and speak to the Elder to conclude the questline.

Quests, where you need to search an area, can be difficult, thanks to cluttered locations or the dark color palette. If you’re struggling to find the Strange Refuge for the ‘At Any Cost’ quest, check out our guide.
