Have you already finished Diablo 4‘s campaign and are a little confused as to how things were left off? You and I were in the same boat, then. At first, when I completed the main story, I was uncertain as to what was going on. Luckily, with some research and revisiting of final cutscenes, I can explain the ending of Diablo 4 for you.
What happened at the end of Diablo 4?
Obvious spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t completed the main story yet, do so now. There are quite a few questions that may be on your mind after facing off against Lilith. While you may be wondering about Lilith’s possible future, there’s a bigger question at hand. You’re probably mainly confused about Neyrelle’s decisions in the epilogue of the game. Let me explain the ending of Diablo 4 and try to answer your pressing questions.
Why did Neyrelle leave?
After you defeat Lilith, and she leaves you off with an ominous warning, you find out something interesting. Neyrelle didn’t end up leaving the Soulstone, or returning to Lorath. Instead, she ran off with the stone holding Mephisto captive, but why would she do such a thing?
Well, we know for a fact that Mephisto is great at manipulation. I don’t truly believe that he wanted to help us out of the goodness of his heart. So was Neyrelle taking off with Mephisto in the stone really just her secretly being evil? No, not at all. From what we know of Neyrelle, she’s intelligent, caring, but also reckless and sometimes naïve. Since she was the one to trap Mephisto in the Soulstone, I wouldn’t be surprised if this connects them in a way she never intended.
Mephisto probably ended up twisting her mind a bit to make her not abandon him. Meaning, we could very well see a DLC continuation of this story where we face off against Neyrelle. I don’t believe we stay enemies in the end, instead, your character and Lorath probably try to rid Mephisto’s corruption from her. There are clearly loose ends waiting to be resolved after watching that final cutscene with Neyrelle on the boat. Will we someday chase after Neyrelle across the sea to stop whatever she’s doing? Probably.
Is Lilith really dead?
We can’t say for sure whether Lilith will return or not in Diablo 4’s future. Honestly, wherever the story continues with Neyrelle, I don’t think it will concern Lilith. The reason I believe this is because of a certain secret post-credits scene discovered by players online. If you’ve read our analysis on it, you’ll understand why I think another child of a Prime Evil will instead be the center of the next story.
Before Lilith’s death, she warns your character that this was a grave mistake and that things will get worse from here on out. Although she turned into ash, she could very well come back alive, if the writers so please. Honestly, though, I think the story ahead would get boring if they just resurrected her like that. Instead, I think we’ll be dealing with Mephisto, and his son Lucion. Darkness is still going to plague Sanctuary, we’re not done saving the world just yet.
