Star Wars Outlaws debuted with a trailer not long into the Xbox Games Showcase, revealing Ubisoft’s long-awaited project from the studio that created The Division. Massive Entertainment has cooked up a full open-world RPG following protagonist Kay Vess in an adventure through the galaxy with the respectable goal of getting rich.
Setting the galactic stage
According to the details, the game takes place between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The Empire is still an indomitable galactic force and more dangerous than ever, with its goals set on snuffing out the Rebel Alliance at all costs. While this Galactic Civil War is taking place on a grand scale, you as Kay Vess will follow a more personal story.
Based on the trailer, the underworld factions play a large role in Star Wars Outlaws. There are multiple shots of the Pyke Syndicate crime gang doing undoubtedly nefarious things. Seeing as the game’s premise is to “fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted,” nobody should have much of an issue with getting into some trouble with said unsavory types.
The trailer shows an encounter between Kay and some acquaintance named Jaylin who proposes a big score that can set her up for life. As a young scoundrel with a lot to prove, you can bet she takes up the job.
Kay also has two companions consisting of a reprogrammed CIS Commando droid sidekick named Nix and a cute little creature that knows a thing or two about getting Kay out of trouble. The trailer also emphasized Kay playing card games and riding speeder bikes which might be activities we’ll be able to do in-game.
Grandiose and potentially demanding
The trailer for Star Wars Outlaws certainly is a visual spectacle. There wasn’t any disclaimer as to what the footage represents, but it could be in-engine which would be very impressive. Don’t get your hopes up too much though, because developers typically render everything with max settings on the most expensive hardware they can get their hands on. Nevertheless, it’s an impressive trailer on a technological level and likely uses Ubisoft’s latest Snowdrop engine.
The trailer confirmed a 2024 launch window for Star Wars Outlaws, and Ubisoft has a Direct showcase tomorrow on June 12 at which the gameplay trailer will premiere. Some other big announcements at the Xbox Games Showcase included Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, and of course, the Starfield Direct.
