How Diablo 4 PC controller support works

Plug and play.

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to playing their favorite video games. Some people prefer a mouse and keyboard, while others prefer to use their console controller. Personally, I play almost everything with my Donkey Kong GameCube Bongos. Old habits die hard, I guess. As time moves on and crossplay becomes the norm, PC support for third-party controllers only gets better and better. Using a PlayStation controller or Xbox Controller on your favorite PC games has become a sinch in most cases, but is there support for Diablo 4?

How Diablo 4 PC controller support works

The simple answer is yes, seamlessly. Blizzard has knocked it out of the park with the controller to mouse and keyboard transition, even allowing hot-swapping in the game. The Xbox controller especially offers perfect connection and useability, with it being a Microsoft product anyway. The PlayStation controller, be it the PS4 or PS5 version, also works beautifully through both Bluetooth and USB cables.

With Microsoft’s own controller, it is super easy to get going with Diablo 4. Simply follow these instructions to pair your Xbox controller.

  • Hold down the Xbox button on your controller until it begins to flash
  • Press and hold the Pair button on your controller until the Xbox button begins to flash
  • Open your Bluetooth and Wireless devices menu from your PC’s control panel settings
  • Select Add Bluetooth Devices
  • Select your Xbox control from the list

PlayStation Controller

PlayStation is technically a third-party controller, but it still works with PC and Diablo 4. The steps are pretty much the same as Xbox.

  • Open up your Bluetooth Devices menu from your Control Panel
  • Select Add Bluetooth Device
  • Press and hold the PlayStation button and Share Button until the lightbar flashes
  • Select your PlayStation controller from the Add Bluetooth Device list

As a side note, you can also choose to simply plug either controller in via USB cable to play Diablo 4. Your PC will easily recognize both devices and download any drivers.

With Diablo 4, your controller does not need to be unplugged to switch between controller play and keyboard and mouse. You can hot-swap in the game as you play. By picking up your controller and moving with the joysticks, Diablo 4 will prioritize that, and the same goes for mouse and keyboard.

Microsoft actually supports up to eight controllers connected at the same time. This means nothing for Diablo 4, though, as there is no couch co-op multiplayer support on PC.
