Tears of the Kingdom – how to hit the big targets on the ceiling in Jonsau Shrine

When you arrive in Jonsau Shrine, you’ll quickly notice two things: a giant wooden ball and a similarly giant target. The target is on the high ceiling. Your goal is to hit the target with the ball so it will flip a switch and allow you to proceed to the next room. You encounter two variations of this puzzle as you venture deeper into the shrine, as well.

Unfortunately, although you can grab the ball easily enough with your Ultrahand ability, you can’t extend its reach to brush against the target. That would be too easy. To hit a big target on the ceiling, you have to submerge an object in the water beneath it and then release it.

In the shrine’s first chamber, this process is easy. Simply grab the ball and swing it around over the water, then send it as deep into the pool as you can. Once you release the ball, buoyancy drives it upward and causes it to strike the target. The door to the next room opens.

In the second chamber, start by defeating the Construct. Look left of where it patrolled to spot a submerged treasure chest. Use the Ultrahand ability to drag the chest out of the water and over to the platform. It contains the Strong Construct Bow. Next, proceed through the second chamber to reach its far end. You should see another target on the ceiling. Below the target, a metal plank floats on the water.

You have a couple of options to hit this target. I returned to the first chamber for the ball. Then I brought it with me to the second chamber and used the same process that allowed me to hit the first target. A different approach is to turn the metal plank on its side and launch it from the water to hit the target.

Hitting the second target opens the way to a third chamber with a final puzzle to solve. This chamber has a ball floating in the water, so there’s no need to drag along the previous ball. You will also see a tall pole with a metal basket attached. Boards are in the way, preventing the basket from dropping to the water’s level. You can’t use Ultrahand to move them while you are standing at the lower level.

There are two main solutions to this puzzle. The simplest approach (and the one I used on my first trip through the shrine) is to drag along the plank from the second chamber. Set it on the water beneath the overhead ledge and swim out to it. While standing on the plank, look up to the platform with the boards and use the Arise ability. You will reach the high platform and then you can drop off the side of the platform to reach the exit.

A second option also works. First, use the Ultrahand ability to move the ball beneath the opening, right near the base of the pole. Sink it into the water and launch it up, which knocks the boards out of the way so the basket drops.

If you act quickly, you can then stand in the basket and use the Recall ability to make it rise back to the higher level. Otherwise, stand in the basket and use the Ultrahand ability. Position the ball in the water below it and then release it. The ball rises, launching you upward in the basket. Now you can paraglide over to the exit.
