Is Mordhau Cross Platform? Answered

Clean slates save digital lives.

Mordhau, the multiplayer medieval melee game, has been entertaining players with large-scale, skill-based battles since arriving on Steam in early 2019. Recently, it also made its way to the Epic Games Store. The expanded availability has new players jumping into the fray and wondering whether the experience is cross platform.

Developed by Triternion, an international team founded in Slovenia, Mordhau is all about big choices. It presents a range of modes including Invasion, Frontline, and Horde. When it comes to platforms on which a person can play, however, the options are currently more limited.

Mordhau is growing in new directions

On August 16, 2022, ahead of the game’s more recent arrival on the Epic Games Store, Triternion released a brief Mordhau trailer announcing plans to bring Mordhau to consoles. Platforms named at the time included PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One. According to the game’s official site, ports to those platforms are still “coming soon.”

In a press release issued in August, Triternion noted some restrictions to cross-play. Specifically, the console releases will offer a “clean slate” approach restricting cross-play to consoles. If they want to match up against PC opponents, players will need to play on that platform. That restriction may very well work to their benefit, since PC gamers have had years to grow acclimated to the brutal battles.

The press release also mentioned smaller maps such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Skirmish, which should be a good fit for console hardware. Even playing on consoles, Mordhau players will be able to “fully customize” their character, making selections about how those characters sound, what weapons they carry, and which armor they wear. Created characters should still be able to take part in 64-player battles already familiar to PC gamers.

With new players joining the battlefield all the time, and with more on the way once console versions drop, it seems Mordhau could have a long life ahead of it… even if PC players can’t go up against their console rivals.
