Vampire Survivors 2 probably won’t happen, since poncle can do much more with the original

There’s plenty of life in these Survivors yet.

Vampire Survivors’ creator Luca Galante, aka poncle, has all but ruled out the possibility of a sequel to his 2022 surprise hit. In an interview with GameSpot, Galante discussed the future of the game and his philosophy on adding new content, revealing that a Vampire Survivors 2 is “unlikely” given the potential the base game has to expand in new directions.

Vampire Survivors 2 isn’t likely in the future

The full GameSpot interview covers Galante’s journey with the game as it went from part-time project to chart-topping champion. It also contains discussion of the game’s future, something the game’s hordes of players are keen to learn more about. In a revelation that may disappoint and excite said hordes in equal measure, Galante noted that he plans to stick to the game’s current DLC strategy for the time being, only going as far as a full sequel if it offered a substantial change to the game’s formula.

The once and future king

“With the way Vampire Survivors is designed, we can deliver both new content and new game mechanics on the existing game, so why make a sequel?” Galante said in the interview. “I think that if we make a sequel or a spiritual successor, then we should offer something radically new.” Galante’s philosophy for adding new content, wherein major new mechanics are free to all while paid DLC adds new characters, weapons, and stages, will continue to be the norm going forward.

The lack of a Vampire Survivors 2 isn’t particularly surprising, given the popularity of the ongoing live service model in the current games market. And it’s even less so when you consider the huge player base the original has, and the way in which it has effectively defined a new sub-genre. You need look no further than Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, the new entry in the immensely popular Deep Rock Galactic franchise, marketing itself as a ‘Survivor-like’ to see the impact the game has had in the wider gaming sphere.

Vampire Survivors is available on Steam.
