Yesterday, developer Telltale Games revealed that it has delayed The Wolf Among Us 2, the sequel to 2013’s The Wolf Among Us, until next year. To coincide with this news, Jamie Ottilie, the CEO of Telltale Games, explained the reasoning for the delay in a conversation with IGN.
According to Ottilie, the developer opted to delay the game for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is that the team wanted to avoid releasing an unfinished product. Since they shifted from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5 midway through development, the team members had to remake several assets that they had already made in Unreal 4.
Additionally, Telltale had to deal with other challenges, such as the pandemic and the need to reestablish itself after the original studio went defunct in 2018. Naturally, this all added quite a bit of time to the development process, making it harder for the team to finish the game by 2023. Theoretically, the developer could have met its original release window by putting out the game in an unfinished state. But of course, it did not want to go for that idea.
The Wolf Among Us 2 is delayed to avoid crunch
The team could have also released the game in 2023 by going through a period of crunch. But fortunately, Ottilie has made it clear that he does not want to resort to that option. Reportedly, the original Telltale studio had a recurring issue with crunch, but Ottilie aims to prioritize a healthy work culture with the new studio. He says that he does not wish to deal with crunch again and that asking others to do it would not be fair.
With The Wolf Among Us 2 now delayed, Telltale Games only has The Expanse: A Telltale Series as its big release of 2023. Currently, Telltale has every episode of The Wolf Among Us 2 in development all at the same time.
