It’s not always fun to retry checkpoints only to die at the last part and have to go back to the start each time. Wanted: Dead can seem pretty tough in spots, but it does actually have an easy mode. But actually using it is easier said than done and there are some caveats. Importantly, you can actually permanently miss the chance to switch to it for your save, so if you find yourself deep into the game, that save will end up stuck on that difficulty. We’re going to break down what you need to do to access easy mode without issue.
The most preferable way of playing Wanted: Dead on easy mode can be found in the game’s first level. On your fifth death, Doc will attempt to revive you as normal. But the game will give you the option to switch to neko-chan mode. But the kicker is that, if you don’t agree to this, it will never show up again. This is a strange decision, as that’s a pretty big choice to make that early on. Additionally, if you switch to this difficulty, there’s no going back. This is the only way to switch to easy mode in Wanted: Dead in a file you’ve already started.
How to unlock easy mode in Wanted: Dead
If you’d rather just do it outside gameplay, however, there’s a way to access it. While on the title screen, use your d-pad and press up, up, down, down, left, left, right, right. If you do it correctly, you’ll hear a sound and you can now start a new game on neko-chan mode. This mode gives Stone cat ears and makes the game significantly easier. It’s a shame that you can’t switch difficulties on the fly, but Wanted: Dead‘s game design revels in acting like it’s the early 00s, so I suppose it makes a certain kind of sense.
