John Carpenter is well known for his film career but also his love of video games. And nearly a decade ago, the director expressed an interest in Dead Space. Well, the spark has been lit once again, as John Carpenter recently expressed his excitement over the idea of making a Dead Space movie.
Yesterday, AV Club sat down with John Carpenter to briefly talk about his love of games, film, and Dead Space. When asked if there was any game he would adapt to a film, he pointed to EA’s survival horror franchise. And it came with the simple explanation of, “That would make a real great movie.” The director’s no stranger to gory alien horror. After all, he directed The Thing back in 1982. Knowing that, it’s hard to imagine anyone else helming a Dead Space adaptation.
The interview also darts around Carpenter’s other gaming favorites. Fallout 76 and Assassin’s Creed seem to be up there, with Sonic the Hedgehog being the one to start it all. But he maintains that he doesn’t want to criticize these games too much. For instance, he likes all the Dead Space games, including Dead Space 3, a title that plenty of fans dislike. Either way, it’s clear that Carpenter has a passion for gaming.
Could a Dead Space movie be in the cards?
John Carpenter’s love for Dead Space is clear, but whether that will actually materialize into a film is tough to say. We’re at a point now where video game adaptations are becoming more widespread. Sonic the Hedgehog has had two films, with a third in production. Plus, Minecraft and Mega Man movies are in development. A while ago there was sure to be some skepticism behind video game adaptations. However, these days we’re not only seeing them succeed, but they’re also bringing fans back to their respective franchises. And with the Dead Space remake right around the corner, now could be the perfect time for a movie adaptation.
