Overwatch has been a massive success in the multiplayer shooter space since its release. It’s no secret that interest has waned over time, though. Seasonal events have kept players engaged, thanks to new skins and modes, but the latest event comes with a caveat. The third Anniversary Remix event for Overwatch just went live, and it brings with it the news that players won’t be able to purchase loot boxes once the event is over.
Overwatch players can still purchase loot boxes until the end of the event, which is on August 30. However, it’s important to note that this change only applies to players who want to outright buy loot boxes. Players can still to earn loot boxes by playing the game, even after August 30.
The Anniversary event for Overwatch is typically a highlight for players, as it allows them to get their hands on every available skin from across every event. It also lets players take part in modes from across many of those events, too. Any players wishing to spend some money as a last chance effort to earn desired skins will need to do so before the end of the month. We don’t know whether the Anniversary event will continue in Overwatch 2, which adds even more uncertainty.
A time of great change
This change shouldn’t be too surprising, as Blizzard seems to be making plenty of changes to mix things up for Overwatch 2. One of these changes is that loot boxes will be removed altogether upon the release of the sequel, and that change applies to Overwatch as well since the original game will be effectively replaced by Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2 is looking to move to a seasonal battle pass model, much like many other games in the shooter space. This means players will have to pay to get their hands on a battle pass, as well as for any skins they wish to purchase from the in-game shop. Being able to purchase individual skins is convenient, but at the same time, it’s disappointing to know that players will have far fewer options for earning free skins just by playing the game.
