John Romero has just announced a new first-person shooter game that he’s working on. His studio Romero Games will develop this new FPS using Unreal Engine 5. The announcement was made on Romero’s official Twitter account, where he confirmed that it’s new IP and that Romero Games is actively hiring to create this “all-new FPS.”
The announcement tweet emphasizes that the studio is looking for people with “Unreal Engine 5 experience.” Unreal Engine 5 is the latest version of Epic Games‘ popular game engine, and it features technology like Lumen and Nanite, which allow for state-of-the-art visuals. There are all sorts of technical reasons why Unreal Engine 5 is beneficial for developers, but all you need to know is that games developed using it will look incredible.
An early announcement of a new IP may not seem all that interesting. However, this isn’t any old new game we’re talking about. This is a new game led by John Romero. When it comes to first-person shooters few people have a portfolio as impressive as Romero’s. He co-founded id Software and was one of the main minds behind Wolfenstein, Quake, and Doom. It’s difficult to say who invented the FPS genre but Romero certainly played a big role in popularizing it.
Specific details about the new shooter are sparse. The studio’s FAQ page confirms that it is working with “a major publisher,” but that’s about it. You can expect more details to be revealed in the future, but for the time being, all we can do is wait.
And wait we will
As exciting as a new game by John Romero is, you probably shouldn’t get too hyped up. The hiring page for Romero Games lists key roles like a lead-level designer and lead character artist. It’s fair to say that without these roles filled, very little development has happened. This project is likely still very early in development and some way off.
