Last Friday user accounts for S2 Games’ DOTA title Heroes of Newerth were compromised through an SQL injection according to a hacker. Players will now have to change their login details according to an update from S2.

Maintenance and downtime have concluded. All passwords will expire shortly, so when prompted please create a new unique secure password to use.

If you changed your password on Monday before 3PM EST (8PM GMT), you will need to change it again as a safeguard.

Thank you for your patience while we dealt with this situation.

NOTE: As of right now to correctly change your password, if you have auto-auth enabled, close the expired box, type your old password again to login. It will pop back up the expired box and you can change the password and it will save correctly. We are working on a fix to this issue.

If players have used the same username and password for other games they would be advised to make sure their details are changed.

Strangely it took S2 a couple of days to respond the problem and fix any security holes. The hacker also hit Reddit to explain his motives which seemed to boil down to it being “hilarious seeing a bunch of fanboys of a game get enraged over the fact that their favourite game has been hacked.”

Thanks Shacknews.
