This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Need for Speed: Payback marks the return of the franchise after a year out from 2015’s Need for Speed. The franchise has gone back to a more story orientated style with the developers aiming to provide an ‘action driving fantasy’. Playing as three characters you will try to gain revenge, or ‘Payback’, against The House, a cartel that runs everything from casinos to the cops. You’ll race everything from hatchbacks to hypercars, across deserts, mountains, and canyons, trying to bring down your foes. Along the way, you’ll find relics which are abandoned cars that you can restore to their former glories and beyond.

At the EA Play conference, gameplay was shown of a highway heist where you have to steal a Koenigsegg Regara from the back of a truck driving down the carriageway. The footage seemed very reminiscent of the type of action you see in the ‘Fast & Furious’ movies. It also showed off a crash mechanic similar to the old Burnout series where as you push someone off the road you get a slow motion view of the crashing their car.
