Nvidia’s New Max-Q Tech Keeps Gaming Laptops Slim but Powerful

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Laptops are very convenient machines. The whole concept behind them is to provide a near-desktop level experience in a transportable form. When it comes to gaming laptops, achieving this goal has always been a little difficult.

Because laptops need to be made with different parts than their desktop counterparts, this has led to them being less powerful in the majority of cases. As for gaming laptops, not only have they been less powerful but they’re also typically more expensive. You’re paying for trying to fit as much power as possible into a compact space. In addition to being pricey, gaming laptops have also typically been on the chunkier side due to the bulkier parts that are on the inside. It looks like Nvidia has finally cracked the code to this issue.

After getting laptop cards almost completely on-par with their desktop equivalents with the Pascal architecture found in the GTX 10-series, Nvidia has revealed its new Max-Q technology at the recent Computex 2017 event. This new tech will allow powerful graphics cards like the GTX 1080 to be shaved down to a very slim 18mm, without sacrificing a lot of power. As a result, gaming laptops can bow be a whole lot sleeker while also keeping their power.

Nvidia has stated that the Max-Q technology will allow laptops to be “3x thinner with up to 3x more performance”. Definitely very exciting! New Max-Q gaming laptops will start hitting shelves as early as June 27th. Here are the manufacturers who have new Max-Q models:

  • Acer
  • Aftershock
  • Alienware
  • ASUS
  • Clevo
  • Dream Machine
  • ECT
  • Gigabyte
  • Hasee
  • HP
  • LDLC

  • Mechrevo
  • MSI
  • Multicom
  • Origin PC
  • PC Specialist
  • Sager
