When you start Sandbox mode in Jurassic World Evolution 2, you’ll see that the T-Rex and the vast majority of dinosaurs still need to be unlocked. Well, this massive carnivorous beast has definitely earned its iconic status as the King of the Cretaceous. Naturally, you’ll want to have it as an attraction in your park. Here’s our Jurassic World Evolution 2 guide to help you unlock the Tyrannosaurus Rex via research.

How to unlock the Tyrannosaurus Rex in Jurassic World Evolution 2
Similar to other Sandbox unlocks in Jurassic World Evolution 2, the T-Rex genome has to be fully researched in Campaign, Chaos Theory, or Challenge mode. Our advice is to pick the Challenge mode – Germany (easy) map since you can also obtain most dinos and buildings in a single run. However, compared to its nemesis in the third film, the Spinosaurus, the T-Rex requires a bit more effort. Here are the requirements to unlock the Tyrannosaurus Rex in Jurassic World Evolution 2:
- Medium Carnivores 1 (Ceratosaurus) – Automatically available at the start of your run.
- Medium Carnivores 2 (Carnotaurus) – Can be unlocked at the start.
- Medium Carnivores 3 (Metriacanthosaurus) – Requires Medium Carnivores 2 and increasing the total carnivore population to +3. You can just use Ceratosaurus or Dilophosaurus to get this part done.
- Large Carnivores 1 (Giganotosaurus) – Release three dinosaurs with the Strong trait.
- Large Carnivores 2 (Tyrannosaurus Rex) – Have a dinosaur with three fights won.
How to get dinosaurs with the Strong Trait in Jurassic World Evolution 2
Our next step to unlock the Tyrannosaurus Rex in Jurassic World Evolution 2 (assuming you’re playing Challenge mode) is by getting the Strong trait on three dinos. There are a couple of ways to do this:
- You can either research and hatch the dinosaurs that can have it randomly (i.e., Small Herbivores -> Pachycephalosaurids 2 -> Pachycephalosaurus).
- Alternatively, you can unlock and research the Tooth and Claw Hardness Gene Modification. This requires you to have a dinosaur that has lost at least two fights. You can do this by having a few carnivores of the same type in one enclosure (i.e., Dilophosaurus or Deinonychus). There’s a chance that they’ll fight every few days.
- The loser tends to get injured, so make sure you have a medical unit ready to scan it.
- Major injuries require the dino to get tranquilized by a capture team, then airlifted to a Paleo-Medical Facility.
- You should also tranquilize the victor to prevent it from accidentally killing its foe while it’s in a weakened/low HP state.
- Wait for a few days and there should be another fight. Just repeat the same steps as above, then complete the Tooth and Claw Hardness research.
- In your Hatchery, pick one that can lay several eggs. Then, modify its genome so that it has a high chance of rolling with the Strong trait. Release these to get this tally done.
As for the part where you need to have a dinosaur with three fights won, well, that should be a given if you’ve been using the aforementioned method (if there’s a loser, then there’s also a winner). Remember to keep this dino alive all throughout. Oh, and this is also a requirement for other unlocks like the Pentaceratops (Armored Herbivores -> Ceratopsids 5) and Maiasaura (Medium and Large Herbivores -> Hadrosaurs 3B).
Getting the Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil and hatching it in Jurassic World Evolution 2
In any case, the remaining processes to unlock the Tyrannosaurus Rex in Jurassic World Evolution 2 are quite expensive. As usual, you’ll do the following:
- Science Center – Research the dinosaur’s genome.
- Expedition Center – The nodes are in North America.
- Science Center – Check the fossils to complete its genome sequence.
- Hatchery – By default, the Tyrannosaurus Rex in Jurassic World Evolution 2 has the following perk chances: 75% Antisocial, 50% Intolerant, and 25% Strong.
- Environment and territory – It prefers forests, sand, live prey, and the Compsognathus.
- Has 1,266 Appeal.
